Last year I began working on a logo and branding project for Houston Doula, Sarah Standley Burke. Although I’d worked for clients in the UK whilst travelling in South America, this was my first new project at such a distance. Sarah is in the States and I am based in Barcelona, Spain. I’m pleased to say that this was no problem and we had a great time coming up with Sarah’s new brand via Facetime and email.
Here you can see the WordPress website and below is an overview of the main steps of the project.
To design a logo and branding toolkit to be used by Sarah for her Doula Services business, Birthmade. Incorporating the tagline Expecting Everything. Logo and brand to be adaptable for Social Media, a personal blog, website and business stationery.
Design preferences summary:
Style – in-tune and professional.
Colours – earth tones, green, taupe, grey (no red).
Imagery – nest, leaves, watercolour, circle, knowledge.
Key words – nature, nurture, support, family, maternity care.
LOGO IDEAS SHEETS
I provided Sarah with three logo concepts. She decided to progress with the second concept, Watercolour. Click on the images if you wish to enlarge them.
Leaves as per client spec, incorporating symbology for baby, knowledge and care. Key words – nature, baby, knowledge, love, care. Green and grey colour set with dusty peach to give warmth.
Watercolour and circle as per client spec. Embryo heart in accentuated letter B. Key words: pregnancy, love, family, maternity. Bright/positive colour set.
Conch shell. Spiritual symbology for birth and fertility, also associated with listening and sound of the sea. Key words: protection, structure, nature, nurture, support. Muted baby boy/girl colour set.
The logo refinements included looking at different watercolour images, different colour palettes and different supporting fonts.
Sarah was quick to decide on the watercolour image but undecided between two very different colour palettes and supporting fonts.
After much debating, she opted for the sans serif supporting font. She decided that the blue and pink palette provided a better association with her work as well as a more professional look. Finally, Sarah requested that the “tail” was removed from the heart within the B.
THE LOGO & BRAND
Below is the Brand Design Sheet, it is an overview of the main elements and colours which form the Birthmade brand.
So far the branding has been used on the Birthmade Facebook page and in designs I worked on for Sarah’s business card and WordPress website.
“Your business cards are all in. To say they are amazing doesn’t quite capture the brevity of the beauty of these cards.” Coryne – Coryne Rich Matthews Designs, Business Card Production, Jan 2016
